Job Description
The Senior C&I Credit Officer is responsible for co-leading the 2nd line credit risk management of Commercial & Industrial (C&I) portfolio. Portfolio includes various specialties, including large shared national credits, leveraged lending, ABL lending, Franchise lending, Security Alarm Lending, Solar lending and other. This role ensures sound credit decisions are made in alignment with the bank’s risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and strategic objectives. The officer will work closely with Deputy Chief Credit Officer and the leadership of the business line to decision Commercial Middle market deals ranging in deal size from $3MM to 50MM, and participations in deals up to $500MM.
Key Responsibilities:
Credit Approvals
- Evaluate and approve middle market C&I loans within delegated authority and participate in the Credit Committee.
- Evaluate and approve risk ratings, annual reviews and covenant waivers within C&I loan portfolio.
- Participate in the pre-deal process, recommending appropriate loan structures, covenants, and risk mitigants, including participation rights and intercreditor arrangements.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory guidelines.
Leadership & Collaboration
Mentor and guide junior credit officers and underwriters.
Collaborate with business line managers to support business development while maintaining credit quality.
Contribute to various Corporate credit projects including acquired portfolio due diligence.
Risk Management & Reporting:
- Monitor the performance of the C&I loan portfolio, including conducting periodic portfolio reviews.
- Contribute to policy, RAC and procedure development.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market conditions, industry developments, and regulatory changes.
- Contribute to market research and new specialty development
- Support audits and regulatory examinations.
Qualifications:
- Broad knowledge of commercial lending, credit underwriting and risk management functions.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial credit underwriting / portfolio management, with a focus on C&I lending.
- Minimum 5 years of commercial loan decisioning, in a 1st or 2nd line functional role.
- Demonstrated expertise in middle market C&I lending including shared national credit markets and leveraged lending.
- Working knowledge of banking regulations.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and mentoring skills.
- Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with loan participation structures and rights.
- Prior workout experience is a plus but not required.
- Exposure to some specialized lending is a plus (ABL, Security Alarm, Franchise lending ecs).
