This position is responsible for supporting the Federal Reserve System’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Research and Development program. The Head of Core Engineering will serve as a member of the group’s leadership team and contribute toward driving the progress of CBDC R&D activities. This position reports directly to the Program’s VP of R&D. A successful candidate will work alongside other program leaders to explore, research, and develop a wide range of possible design options and technologies that could be used to support a potential US CBDC.

Given the US dollar’s importance, the Federal Reserve System seeks to further understand the implications, costs, and benefits of the use of different technologies for a potential US CBDC to better understand this emerging field. This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a world-class team working on cutting edge technologies related to CBDC R&D. You will participate in a dynamic work environment that has the feel of a startup while also maintaining the benefits of a larger organization.

This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule, with a mix of remote work from your home office in the First District and planned onsite work expected for intentional collaboration. Limited travel may be required. Candidates must reside in 1st district.

As part of the program’s leadership team, the Head of Core Engineering will work alongside and in collaboration with the Product Owner and Head of TechOps. The individual will be responsible for investigating, analyzing, architecting, and implementing different technological options for a potential US CBDC. A successful candidate will manage a team of highly skilled software architects and engineers focused on exploring, analyzing, and developing possible implementations of a core engine other potential features for a CBDC. the individual will also work closely with the TechOps team to investigate scalability, security, and system reliability. We are looking for a person who can deliver exceptional results and who possesses an in-depth knowledge of the full software engineering stack, preferably with a strong background in Cryptocurrencies and familiarity with other distributed/decentralized principals. The ideal candidate will be able to think with a product mindset, work in an Agile environment, and shift priorities as needed. They will also be someone who enjoys experimentation, cutting edge research, and is interested in having a significant impact on the potential for a US CBDC.

What Will Be Expected of You

  • Provide thought and people leadership for the core engineering team and the Program more broadly
  • Oversee the development and delivery of a technical roadmap with requirements ensuring integration to overall Program roadmap
  • Maintain and build a high-performance engineering culture supporting cross team collaboration and delivering high quality solutions
  • Craft a relevant technological vision that balances aspiration and pragmatism
  • Provide technical and functional expertise, and offer support where needed in overcoming road blocks
  • Ensure compliance with Federal Reserve policies and standards.

Expertise you will bring

  • Demonstrated experience in software engineering. Cryptocurrency/ Distributed Ledger Technology desired
  • Proven background in managing an engineering team
  • Experience leading programs, projects, or areas requiring in-depth subject matter expertise
  • Experience implementing successful programs and participating in all aspects of the product development life cycle.
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical documents, including design documents, specifications, and technology roadmaps
  • Deep understanding of technology-driven businesses, including technical components and modern application development processes
  • Advanced experience using agile methodologies to deliver IT projects
