VP, Head of Alternative and Impact Investments

The Role

The VP, Head of Alternative and Impact Investments will manage a team of investment experts that work on behalf of the charity and who are responsible for working with external investment advisors to assess proposed investments in private equity, real estate, private credit, hedge fund, and other alternative and non-traditional investments. This team will also work closely with external fund managers, general partners, and custodial staff to support the timely execution of alternative investment transactions. This position requires strong expertise in alternative investments and their role in a diversified portfolio. This role also requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, positive professional attitude, and ability to work in a dynamic team environment.

In this role, you will define and communicate the direction and strategy of the alternative investments and impact investments capabilities. You will work across the organization to influence outcomes and gain alignment on initiatives. You will set standards of care, policies and guidelines that will drive the work of the team. You will provide managerial oversight of the team, including the establishment of controls and reporting. You and the team will support new and existing advisor and donor relationships though consultative and solution-oriented discussions with advisors, donors, and with internal stakeholders (relationship managers and fundraisers). You will work across the management teams to identify and implement opportunities to improve service quality and operating efficiency, optimize costs, and mitigate operational risk. You will serve as the main point of contact for organizational strategic and departmental initiatives and projects related to alternative investments and impact investments. You will work collaboratively with internal auditors and other operation heads in developing and maintaining a strong control environment. You will cultivate a sense of partnership and collaboration, and support an inclusive and respectful work environment. Mentor and develop team members to their full potential. Your team will conduct due diligence reviews on proposed new alternative investments by applying a compliance-based lens against a set of established investment policies and guidelines. They will provide transaction support and oversight through analyzing, onboarding and maintaining complex, non-traditional investments that involve non-standard contracts, investment execution, wire instructions, valuation support, investment and operational due diligence reports, and documentation. They will collaborate with internal legal and tax teams as needed to support a transaction. They will provide in-depth analysis of portfolio and fund performance, risk, cash flows, and underlying fund and company investments.

The Expertise and Skills You Bring

  • 15+ years’ experience in alternative investments or private markets front or middle office, or in an investments role with demonstrated ability to gain client trust.

  • MBA or graduate degree in finance, economics, or related field

  • CFA and/or CAIA, or progress towards these certifications is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience setting multi-year strategies for a functional team, working across an organization to gain trust and alignment with other senior leaders.

  • Strong intrapersonal skills, building and strengthening relationships, influencing without authority.

  • Proven experience leading a team of successful professionals and experts, including mentoring and career development.

  • Strong understanding of alternative investments, including private equity, real estate, private credit, hedge funds, and other non-traditional investments

  • Strong understanding of impact investments, including ESG, PRIs, and the landscape of impact-oriented solutions

  • Deep understanding of investment offering materials, including limited partnership agreements and subscription documents

  • Experience with investment and operational due diligence

  • Experience with investment policy statements

  • Strong analytical skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience with business cycle planning, budgeting, forecasting, resource planning

  • Experience identifying and maintaining sound internal controls and data quality environment.

  • Experience working with technology teams to drive business requirements for system enhancements

  • Superb work ethic, attention to detail, team orientation, and commitment to excellence

  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to form and maintain strong business relationships. Ability to influence without authority when needed.

  • Experience with Advent, Bloomberg and alternative investment third party services is a plus.

Most roles at Fidelity are Hybrid, requiring associates to work onsite every other week (all business days, M-F) in a Fidelity office. This does not apply to Remote or fully Onsite roles.
