The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description

Launch your Underwriting career at Liberty Mutual Insurance - A Fortune 100 Company!

Provides expert technical underwriting assistance and formal referral approval for the Property and Marine line of business via the H.O. Referral Program (preference is for a candidate with robust Inland Marine / Ocean Marine experience, but also considering Large Single Carrier expertise). Interacts with field underwriters on all mandatory referral cases and voluntary consultation items. Visit field offices to conduct in-person referrals, facilitate training, and conduct audits. Foster a cooperative and collaborative relationship with the field and strive for creative solutions without compromising standards.

  • Evaluate, conduct, and document referrals from underwriters on accounts or coverage with higher hazards, highest complexity, higher limits, or more significant premium for the Property and Marine line of business; identify creative solutions and build underwriter expertise and confidence while protecting the company's assets.
  • Facilitate ongoing and frequent interaction with assigned offices and underwriters outside of required referral activities, building underwriter confidence and expertise.
  • Visit field offices during key/busy periods to make in-person referrals, participate in field underwriting audits, and conduct training sessions.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for Training, Systems Development, Product Management, and other functions; participate in or lead significant projects of considerable scope and complexity.
  • Perform a high-level quality control review to ensure proper policy structure. Work closely with the underwriting support supervisors to identify quality gaps and required training.
  • Serve in a lead capacity and act as a resource to less experienced, promote best practices within the Majors Property and Marine referral/underwriting officer group, and lead/influence by example.

Qualifications

  • Expert-level knowledge of all coverage forms, exclusions, pricing, structure, rating, rating plans, loss forecasting, credit risk, and market knowledge.
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance operations; claims, finance and actuarial concepts; regulatory environment; loss control/risk engineering; reinsurance; account management; product development; and industry trends.
  • Must be a skilled collaborator who is willing to assess all sides of an issue, bring in others with expertise, and have the ability to advance the collaboration model.
  • Other professional skills required include advanced communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, listening); approachability; tact; analyzing and problem solving; relationship and service driven; negotiation skills; and demonstrated ability to consistently and positively influence others as generally acquired through a related bachelor's degree, ten or more years of relevant experience that includes reinsurance, coaching/developing others, working with brokers/agents and currency with market trends and developments.
