Description

The US Retail Markets (USRM) Claims Data Science team is hiring a Director I, Data Scientist to advance our Generative AI capabilities across Claims. This is a senior individual contributor role for a highly technical, execution-focused data scientist who excels at rapidly building and iterating on LLM-based AI systems.

Advances in foundation models, RAG, agentic systems, and multimodal AI are creating new opportunities to support adjusters, improve customer communications, and increase operational efficiency. This role focuses on rapidly developing high-quality proof-of-concept (POC) solutions, rigorously measuring their performance, and helping define Liberty Mutual’s standards for GenAI sophistication in the claims domain.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and iterate on LLM- and GenAI-based POCs for claims use cases (e.g., claim summarization, adjuster Q&A, work review, customer communications).
  • Architect end-to-end GenAI systems integrating LLMs, RAG pipelines, agentic workflows, and structured/unstructured claims data.
  • Apply strong software engineering and ML Ops practices, including object-oriented Python, modular design, experimentation, and monitoring.
  • Define and implement GenAI evaluation and measurement strategies, including human-in-the-loop review and automated quality metrics.
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Product, Architecture, UX, and Claims stakeholders to translate ambiguous problems into working solutions.
  • Provide technical mentorship and thought leadership through design reviews and collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Expert-level Python development with strong object-oriented design and engineering best practices.
  • Proven experience rapidly building Generative AI and LLM-based applications beyond simple demos.
  • Strong ML Ops experience, including model lifecycle management, experimentation, evaluation, monitoring, and operational readiness.
  • Demonstrated ability to measure AI/ML and GenAI system quality and business impact using quantitative and qualitative approaches.
  • Experience partnering with non-data-science stakeholders in complex, enterprise environments.
  • Competencies typically acquired through a Ph.D. degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Actuarial Science or other scientific field of study) and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, a Master`s degree (scientific field of study) and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelor`s degree (scientific field of study) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.

Additional Skills and Experiences (Nice to Have):

  • Experience with GenAI and application frameworks, such as:
  • OpenAI APIs or comparable foundation model platforms
  • LlamaIndex, LangChain, LangGraph
  • CrewAI or other agentic orchestration frameworks
  • Experience deploying AI systems in cloud-based, enterprise-scale environments.
  • Familiarity with vector databases and embedding-based retrieval systems.
  • Knowledge of insurance claims processes, data, or technology.
  • Experience transitioning GenAI prototypes into production in partnership with engineering teams.
  • FastAPI or similar Python API frameworks
