Description

Acts as a technical director and is the first point of contact for the frontline underwriting teams for all questions, key decisions or referrals. May be aligned across all lines of business in North America or a single line in a profit center, sometimes supporting a large underwriting organization or accountable for a P&L.

The Majors Property role is responsible for driving underwriting strategy and shaping the future direction of the segment by creating, enhancing, and maintaining key underwriting guidelines. This position leads the development and ongoing refinement of LOA tools, ensuring underwriting consistency and clarity across the organization. The roles also coordinate, develops, and delivers critical training initiatives to strengthen technical expertise and field execution. As a subject matter expert on high-impact strategic projects, this position influences process improvements and enterprise initiatives while conducting quality audits to uphold underwriting excellence. Additionally, the role provides high-value referral and consultation support to underwriters, helping drive profitable decision-making and disciplined portfolio management.


Responsibilities

  • Manages authority and referrals at the profit center level, where delegated by the relevant CUO, with authority to resolve issues locally where appropriate.
  • Monitors frameworks for underwriting decisions (e.g., referrals, technical reviews) and recommends improvements, as needed.
  • Collates product information to inform planning and tracks progress against the defined plan and strategy for respective line of business/Industry.
  • Evaluates line of business/Industry/UW portfolio performance regularly at either the NA or profit center level, working with Underwriting Leaders to identify drivers of performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Drives line of business/UW technical excellence across the GRS NA sub-segments or profit center, working with Underwriting Leaders to identify and resolve issues. Works with Underwriting Leaders to identify product and services enhancements, underwriter capability development opportunities (e.g., skills, tools), and elevates to aligned CUO (Product or GRS NA sub-segment).
  • Supports the aligned CUO and business leaders with the product and underwriting components of strategy and planning processes at either the GRS NA segment or product level.
  • Models effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders and partners (e.g., UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, NA Product Teams).

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or equivalent is typically required
  • A minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related business experience
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business
