Description

This position supports Liberty Mutual’s program for managing compliance with economic and trade sanctions. Sanctions are laws and regulations that restrict or prohibit certain commercial activities involving targeted countries, entities, and individuals. Sanctions are intended to advance national security and foreign policy objectives, including combating terrorism, financial crime, narcotics trafficking, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This role sits within the Global Financial Crimes compliance area, part of Liberty Mutual’s Global Compliance & Ethics (GC&E) function. The Compliance Investigator will focus on economic and trade sanctions investigations, using compliance software, internal and external databases, and open-source information to complete investigations. The role is also responsible for identifying risk and efficiency trends to strengthen and advance the screening operation and will support other Global Financial Crimes initiatives as needed. While this position involves daily investigations, it also includes significant responsibilities related to project management, data analysis, and process improvement.

This is a remote position. Candidates within 50 miles of a Liberty Mutual office are required to report onsite twice a week. Please note this is subject to change.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate potential sanctions matches to determine whether business transactions should be halted or permitted to proceed, in accordance with compliance protocols.
  • Participate in globally diverse projects supporting screening operations across multiple Liberty Mutual operations.
  • Conduct analytical assessments of current processes and procedures; design, test, and implement process improvements to reduce enterprise risk and increase productivity and efficiency within the sanctions screening function.
  • In conjunction with GC&E attorneys, support global business units by reviewing and assessing potential policyholders, claimants, vendors, and other third parties to identify sanctions-related risks associated with a given coverage or transaction.
  • Serve as the primary owner and point of accountability for enterprise sanctions screening integrations, coordinating with local business partners to support successful implementation and ongoing stability.
  • Lead end-to-end integration lifecycle management, including intake of integration opportunities/gaps, kickoff coordination, testing oversight, go-live readiness, post-implementation monitoring, and formal closure.
  • Provide advisory support and subject-matter expertise to stakeholders on sanctions screening requirements, integration feasibility, sequencing, and risk considerations for new systems.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external vendors and service providers (e.g., sanctions screening vendors), supporting implementation questions, issue resolution, configuration changes, and production support escalations.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously enhance playbooks, SOPs, and role documentation to establish consistent, repeatable processes and reduce reliance on institutional knowledge.
  • Partner with leadership to identify and prioritize integration gaps that present regulatory, operational, or audit risk, and drive remediation efforts to closure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative subject (example: Mathematics, Finance, Economics) or Legal/Political Science/Insurance and experience with quantitative analysis preferred.
  • Approximately 2-4 years related work experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of insurance principles and concepts required.
  • Advanced analytical/problem solving and research skills.
  • Effective communication skills for writing reports/proposals and making presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and lead others during projects.
