Description

Agile BU Expert Attorney – Grade 94

Business Unit Legal Solutions (a practice group within Global Legal & Compliance) is seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious insurance attorney with deep experience analyzing insurance coverage and domestic insurance regulatory matters to join its Shared Solutions team.

This role supports Liberty’s Global Risk Solutions (GRS) and U.S. Retail Markets (USRM) business units within a dynamic environment. The successful candidate will counsel internal clients on insurance coverage and regulatory matters, identify, analyze, and escalate key product, policy, operational, and emerging trends to dedicated business and legal partners, and handle complex, specialized, high-exposure, and strategically significant legal assignments.

Deep expertise and familiarity with personal and commercial insurance operations are required. The candidate must also possess the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams, think strategically and broadly, demonstrate a growth mindset, and provide practical, solutions-focused legal guidance.

This role is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and

judgment, serve as a subject matter resource within the team, advise, and influence business and legal leadership on matters involving significant legal, operational, financial, or reputational risk.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on insurance coverage matters involving first- and third-party coverage issues for commercial and personal policies, including more complex, novel, high-exposure, or high-visibility matters.

• Perform legal research and provide legal coverage opinions to claims and business personnel on first- and third-party coverage issues in commercial and personal policies, including specialized, high-impact, or sensitive assignments.

• Counsel internal partners on insurance legal matters impacting claims, underwriting, product development, and distribution operations across all 50 states and North America.

• Engage with leadership across GRS and USRM business units to understand key strategies and initiatives and align legal resources to best enable desired business outcomes.

• Develop and deliver training sessions for internal clients on legal and regulatory topics relevant to their functions.

• Monitor, analyze, and interpret evolving insurance case law, statutes, and regulations to identify emerging trends and proactively communicate insights that inform business decisions and risk mitigation strategies.

• Deliver clear, business-focused legal opinions, including on complex or novel issues where legal precedent may be limited or unclear, and make recommendations that appropriately balance legal risk and business objectives.

• Collaborate closely with GRS and USRM Legal teams to align legal guidance with business strategies and operational goals, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and promoting a seamless “One Legal” approach.

• Cross-train teammates on areas of expertise and serve as a subject matter resource to other attorneys and legal professionals.

• Provide insights to business partners that enhance legal service delivery, optimize work processes, and drive improvement across the team and broader legal support model.

• Lead or play a principal role in addressing cross-functional or enterprise-significant legal issues and in developing practical guidance, playbooks, or frameworks for recurring or emerging matters.

• Uphold the highest standards of legal ethics, professionalism, and corporate responsibility.

• Responsibilities may change and increase over time as business needs and individual’s capabilities warrant.

Qualifications

• Significant expertise in providing comprehensive legal coverage advice, with an ability to handle multiple priorities timely and efficiently on matters involving commercial and personal insurance operations and related issues or time-sensitive matters.

• Proven analytical skills, as well as effective legal writing and communication skills, with attention to detail and client focus.

• Ability to build productive relationships with Company personnel, as well as outside counsel and representatives of other companies.

• Broad and deep knowledge of legal issues attendant to Liberty’s business units, GRS and USRM, specifically experience with legal issues associated with property and casualty insurance (designation such as CPCU a plus).

• Ability to operate independently with minimal oversight and exercise strong legal and business judgment on highly complex, ambiguous, or high-risk matters.

• Demonstrated ability to advise senior stakeholders, oversee outside counsel, and serve as a recognized or emerging subject matter resource in relevant substantive areas.

• Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one jurisdiction in the United States. Must be in good standing for all jurisdictions in which the candidate is admitted.

• Generally, requires at least ten years’ experience as a practicing attorney.

Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
