Description

Business Unit Legal Solutions (a practice group within Global Legal & Compliance) is seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious insurance attorney with substantial experience analyzing insurance coverage and insurance regulatory matters to join its Shared Solutions team.

This role will support Liberty’s Global Risk Solutions (GRS) and U.S. Retail Markets (USRM) business units within a dynamic environment. The successful candidate will deliver practical, business-focused legal and regulatory counsel, including insurance coverage advice, across multiple business functions, including claims, underwriting, product, and distribution, while embracing the use of technology, innovative ways of working, and a high standard of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility.

Expertise and familiarity with personal and commercial insurance operations are required. The candidate is expected to manage a broad portfolio of matters independently, including complex issues, and partner with senior legal colleagues on novel, sensitive, and high-exposure matters. The candidate must also possess the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams, think strategically and broadly, demonstrate a growth mindset, and provide practical, solutions-focused legal guidance.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on insurance coverage matters involving first- and third-party coverage issues for commercial and personal policies, including matters requiring careful analysis of policy language, legal authority, and business impact.

• Counsel internal partners on insurance legal matters impacting claims, underwriting, product development, and distribution operations across all 50 states and North America.

• Engage with business partners, legal colleagues, and, as appropriate, business leadership across GRS and USRM to understand key strategies and initiatives and align legal resources to best enable desired business outcomes.

• Conduct or assist in delivering training sessions for internal clients on legal and regulatory topics relevant to their functions.

• Monitor, analyze, and interpret evolving insurance case law, statutes, and regulations to identify emerging trends and proactively communicate insights that inform business decisions and risk mitigation strategies.

• Deliver clear, business-focused legal opinions, including on complex issues, and collaborate or escalate as appropriate on particularly novel, high-risk, or enterprise-significant questions.

• Collaborate closely with GRS and USRM Legal teams to align legal guidance with business strategies and operational goals, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and promoting a seamless “One Legal” approach.

• Cross-train teammates and share knowledge on areas of expertise.

• Contribute to knowledge sharing, and training resources in areas of experience.

• Provide insights to business partners that enhance legal service delivery, optimize work processes, and drive improvement.

• Uphold the highest standards of legal ethics, professionalism, and corporate responsibility.

• Responsibilities may change and increase over time as business needs and individual’s capabilities warrant.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in providing comprehensive legal coverage advice, with an ability to handle multiple priorities timely and efficiently on matters involving commercial and personal insurance operations and related issues.
  • Proven analytical skills, as well as effective legal writing and communication skills, with attention to detail and client focus.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with Company personnel, as well as outside counsel and representatives of other companies.
  • Broad working knowledge of legal issues attendant to Liberty’s business units, GRS and USRM, specifically experience with legal issues associated with property and casualty insurance (designation such as CPCU a plus).
  • Ability to operate independently with minimal oversight while exercising sound judgment regarding when collaboration or escalation is appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a varied portfolio of coverage and regulatory matters and provide practical guidance to internal clients.
  • Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one jurisdiction in the United States. Must be in good standing for all jurisdictions in which the candidate is admitted.
  • Generally, requires five to seven years’ experience as a practicing attorney.

Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
