Description

Internal candidates that are remote or aligned to another office not listed may still be considered for this role.

We’re seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead and grow Liberty’s API Management capabilities and platform services. You will be a technical leader on the API Management team responsible for designing, operating, and evolving our Apigee-based API platform and the surrounding tooling and practices that enable producers and consumers to build, secure, operate, and scale APIs reliably.

In this role you will create and implement API gateway configurations, design authorization patterns and security controls, troubleshoot runtime and platform issues, and partner across engineering, product and operations to drive API lifecycle best practices (design, contract, governance, testing, observability, and performance). You’ll also mentor engineers, influence platform roadmaps, and help modernize how Liberty exposes and protects services to internal and external consumers.

This role is ideal for an experienced platform engineer who combines Apigee (or comparable gateway) knowledge with strong networking, security, and software engineering skills, plus a track record of operating production systems at scale.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead design and implementation of API gateway solutions, policies and flows using Apigee while partnering across functions to influence and shape the product roadmap.
  • Define and enforce API security patterns (OAuth 2.0, TLS, API keys), authorization models, and token flows for producers and consumers.
  • Architect solutions that balance security, performance, scalability and developer experience.
  • Drive AI Engineering practices on team, coach and mentor junior engineers, fostering their growth while also working independently to solve complex technical problems and provide production support as needed.
  • Troubleshoot platform, network and application issues across the API lifecycle; perform root-cause analysis and corrective design.
  • Build and maintain automation (CI/CD, IaC) for API deployments, gateway configuration, and environment management.
  • Partner with product, architecture, engineering and operations to establish API governance, versioning, documentation (OpenAPI), testing and monitoring standards.
  • Implement observability (metrics, traces, logs, alerts) and performance tuning for gateway and backend services.
  • Mentor and guide engineers on API design best practices, secure development, and platform usage.
  • Evaluate and introduce best-in-class tools and integrations (developer portals, rate limiting, caching, analytics, service mesh where appropriate).

Hiring Manager = Marc Valyo, Manager, Engineering

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years designing/operating large scale platforms or gateways; senior/principal-level engineering experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience designing, configuring and operating Apigee Edge/Apigee X (or equivalent gateways such as Kong, AWS API Gateway, Azure API Management).
  • Solid understanding / knowledge of API security principals: OAuth 2.0 (authorization code, client credentials), OpenID Connect, JWT validation, token introspection.
  • Strong networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, load balancing, reverse proxies, CDN basics and common networking troubleshooting tools.
  • Practical development experience in at least one of Go, Java, or Node.js; able to read, debug and liaise with application teams.
  • Skilled in using Splunk, Datadog and CloudWatch for monitoring, extracting insights, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Familiar with developer portals, API analytics, and developer onboarding best practices.
  • Excellent communication, partnership and mentoring skills — able to work with engineers, product managers, vendors, and security/compliance teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
