Description
Hiring Manager: Karen Slayter
Do you have the skills—and drive—to join a tech team that’s working to digitally transform a trillion-dollar industry? From test-driving the latest technologies to creating intuitive consumer apps, Liberty Mutual is constantly innovating and creating industry-leading solutions that provide peace of mind for our customers worldwide. As a principal software engineer at Liberty Mutual, you’ll consult on highly complex projects and solve technical problems, while working in an agile environment that has the creative energy of a start-up—and the full backing and comprehensive benefits of a Fortune 100 company.
We encourage you to apply and bring your expertise if you’re a:
- Technical problem solver: Going far beyond simply developing error-free source code, test scripts, components and system architectures, you’ll document and build deployment guides aimed at maintaining robust, relevant software
- Customer-centric engineer: Putting clients’ needs first, you’ll translate customer requirements into technical applications and support the implementation of new software
- Motivated mentor: Exercise your technical chops while coaching and collaborating with junior software engineers.
- Forward thinker: Merely fixing a problem isn’t enough – using your proactive mindset and initiative, you’ll also identify opportunities to enhance performance, quality and efficiency
You will be a Tech Leader in the Risk Intake and Operations Enablement portfolio in GRS Distribution and Underwriting Tech. You will lead the engineering charge to deploy AI‑enabled risk intelligence and automation that transforms submission intake and underwriting. You’ll support architecture and own delivery of a reimagined ingestion pipeline that extracts, captures, and enriches data early — enabling light‑touch underwriting and expedited quoting for low‑complexity accounts, while surfacing key risk indicators to prioritize complex, high‑value submissions. The result: faster, better-informed decisions, shorter submission‑to‑quote timelines, higher quote rates and improved win rates.
What you’ll do
- Lead design and delivery of secure, observable, cost‑effective serverless services and REST APIs to support intelligent submission ingestion, enrichment, and decisioning (API Gateway, Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, S3).
- Build and operationalize UiPath automations and Orchestrator solutions (workflows, queues, assets, jobs) that integrate tightly with microservices and event pipelines.
- Integrate LLMs/GenAI into development and production workflows safely: prompting strategies, guardrails, confidence scoring, human‑in‑the‑loop paths, and model monitoring.
- Own API and integration best practices (JSON/XML payloads, OAuth2/JWT, versioning, idempotency, rate limiting) and resilience patterns (retries, circuit breakers, DLQs).
- Drive observability, SLIs/SLOs, structured logging, distributed tracing, alerting and incident response for both automations and microservices.
- Mentor and lead engineers, run design reviews, improve CI/CD for serverless and automation artifacts, and deliver clear developer experience (OpenAPI specs, runbooks, test harnesses).
Qualifications
Experience
- Eight or more years of software engineering experience
Education
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience
What we’re looking for
- Proven experience building and supporting RESTful APIs and integrations (JSON/XML) with modern auth (OAuth2, JWT).
- Hands‑on UiPath Studio and Orchestrator experience and demonstrated ability to design robust automation with secure credential management.
- Strong OO programming skills in Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Java, with a focus on clean, well‑tested code and TDD practices.
- Practical production experience with AWS serverless stack and IaC (CDK/CloudFormation), with attention to security (IAM, secrets), observability, and cost optimization.
- Experience integrating LLMs/GenAI responsibly into production systems and using copilots/agents to enhance productivity.
- Strong communicator and technical leader who can translate business objectives into reliable automation and API solutions.
Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
