Description

The Personal Lines Auto Underwriting Effectiveness team is looking for a Director, Product Analysis, to define and govern the underwriting appetite for personal auto insurance.

As a member of the Underwriting Practices team, you will set clear, data-driven, countrywide eligibility guidelines for both new and in-force business and translate strategy into consistent, executable underwriting standards across states, channels, and platforms. This role operates with broad influence across U.S. Personal Lines functions at Liberty Mutual. The ideal candidate has deep personal lines auto underwriting knowledge, strong cross-functional collaboration experience and excellent communication and storytelling skills. This role will also lead a small group of analysts, providing direction, prioritization, and coaching to support delivery of underwriting strategy and insights.

Key responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the countrywide underwriting appetite for personal auto, including eligibility, and set guardrails that allow disciplined underwriting with appropriate flexibility.
  • Ensure underwriting practices are aligned with pricing to deliver profitable growth and strong retention.
  • Lead regular reviews of underwriting rules and eligibility criteria to maintain effectiveness, competitiveness, and regulatory compliance; promote consistent interpretation and application across channels and states.
  • Evaluate and implement changes to underwriting guidelines, risk acceptance practices, and decisioning frameworks, balancing risk selection with business objectives.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to clarify appetite, ensure compliant implementation, and translate strategy into automated rules and front-line tools.
  • Influence outcomes and mentor underwriting team members by demonstrating expertise on risk selection.
  • Lead and develop a small team of analysts, establishing priorities, mentoring team members, and ensuring delivery of strategic underwriting recommendations and insights.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, economics, or other quantitative field. 6 years, typically 8 years or more relevant work experience, typically 8 years. Master's degree beneficial.
  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, and data analysis software (e.g., SAS, Snowflake).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Personal Lines insurance with expertise in auto insurance products
  • Significant experience with stakeholder management and collaboration with teams spanning Risk Analytics, State Management, Delivery, IT, Distribution, Operations, & Claims to drive underwriting strategy.
  • Must have good exceptional planning, organization, analytical, decision-making and communication skills.
  • Experience leading others is required, including setting team priorities, developing talent, and driving accountability for results.
