Description
Claims is where Liberty Mutual’s promise to customers is delivered every day, and fraud prevention is how we help protect that promise, keeping insurance fair, affordable, and sustainable for everyone. We're hiring a Senior Director to lead the data science and AI team supporting our Medical, SIU (Special Investigations Unit), and Programs (MSP) Claims organization and Central Fraud Hub, building the models, decisions, and tools that shape how we detect fraud, resolve claims, and serve customers at scale.
This is a builder's role with executive visibility. You'll set the AI strategy for the space, lead a team of 15 data scientists, and partner directly with senior claims and fraud leaders to turn AI capabilities into operational changes that move the numbers that matter.
What you'll do
- Set the data science and AI strategy for MSP and the Central Fraud Hub. Own the portfolio: what gets built, what gets killed, and what gets scaled.
- Lead, grow, and develop a team of data scientists. Hire, coach, and create the conditions for technical excellence and accountability.
- Partner with senior business leaders to find the highest-leverage opportunities, scope them rigorously, and drive adoption into workflows and decisions.
- Oversee technically complex work: predictive models, optimization, experimentation, and applied generative AI. Stay close enough to the detail to push quality and make hard tradeoff calls.
- Present findings and recommendations to senior executives. Influence decisions on profitability, customer experience, loss outcomes, and program design.
- Champion responsible AI: explainability, fairness, governance, and alignment with regulatory expectations in a highly regulated environment.
- Build the operating rhythm with business partners (roadmaps, value tracking, experimentation, adoption measurement) that turns pilots into scaled, durable solutions.
Qualifications
- Significant experience leading data science, ML, or AI teams, including director-level or team-of-teams scope.
- Track record of getting ML, optimization, experimentation, or generative AI solutions adopted into business operations, not just deployed.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with senior executives and shape strategy, not just deliver requests.
- Strong people leadership: hiring, developing, and retaining technical talent in a competitive market.
- Comfort translating technical concepts for non-technical executives and frontline operators.
- Experience in regulated, high-stakes, or operationally complex environments.
- Bonus, not required: direct experience in claims, fraud/SIU, medical claims, billing, underwriting, or insurance more broadly.
What success looks like in the first year
- MSP and Central Fraud Hub leaders see your team as a strategic partner, not a service desk.
- A clear, prioritized portfolio with outcomes tied to fraud loss avoidance, claim outcomes, operational efficiency, and customer experience.
- Your team is fully staffed, growing in capability, and known across Liberty Mutual for quality and impact.
- Several production deployments with documented business value.
