Description

The Telematics Data Science team is seeking an experienced technical leader to manage a team of three data scientists and help turn one of the richest data assets in insurance into products that drive business impact. By transforming billions of miles of high-frequency driving data into actionable data products, this team supports decisions across the organization.

This leader will guide the team in building and maintaining data products, dashboards, and analytical tools that serve internal partner teams across multiple lines of business. Success in this role requires a deep understanding of Telematics data sources and products. You will have an opportunity to shape the foundation of how Telematics data is used across Liberty - leading a team at the center of a rapidly growing capability that directly influences how we understand our customers, price our products, and make decisions across the business. You’ll develop deep expertise in our Telematics data ecosystem and translate that knowledge into data products, dashboards, and insights that our partner teams rely on every day. If you thrive at the intersection of technical depth and people leadership, we want to talk to you.

In addition to owning data product development, this leader and their team will be responsible for performing ad hoc research and data analytics — whether responding to questions from partner teams or proactively investigating anomalies detected in the data — ensuring stakeholders always have timely, reliable insights to inform their decisions.

This role is a great fit for someone who combines strong technical depth with a collaborative, service-oriented mindset, and should be as comfortable digging into the root cause of a data oddity as they are translating a partner team's business need into a well-crafted data product.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven ability to lead and drive technical work and analytical projects to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the relevant audiences and stakeholders
  • Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the aligned functional area or SBU
  • Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context
  • Experience with insurance industry products and business processes
  • Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact
  • Strong programming and MLOps skills are required
  • Experience using a version control system such as Git is required
  • Expertise with Python and SQL is required
  • Experience building and maintaining a production-grade data pipeline using modern tools is required
  • Experience building and maintaining data models with Snowflake or other Cloud-based RDMS is required
  • Experience building, maintaining, and scaling data pipelines with orchestration tools such as Airflow and DBT is required
  • Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD build pipelines is preferred
  • Familiarity with machine learning and predictive modeling concepts
  • Experience with Spark, Hadoop, AWS EMR, Presto or other common big data tools is highly preferred
  • Competencies typically acquired with Bachelors w/ 10+ years, Masters w/ 7+ years, or Ph. D with 5+ years of relevant experience in a quantitative field

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and develop a team of 3 data scientists, fostering growth, collaboration, and high-quality output
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of Telematics data sources, products, and infrastructure, serving as the team's subject matter expert over time
  • Lead the development and maintenance of data products, dashboards, and visualizations that meet the needs of internal partner teams
  • Proactively identify and investigate data abnormalities, surfacing root cause analyses and insights to relevant stakeholders
  • Respond to and prioritize analytical requests from partner teams, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery
  • Manage the development lifecycle of data products, including deployments and CI/CD pipelines
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to evaluate new Telematics data sources
  • Present findings, insights, and recommendations that influence business decisions across profitability, growth, and customer satisfaction

**This role may have in-office requirements depending on candidate location**

Candidates who live within 50 miles of Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Seattle, WA; Columbus, OH; or Plano, TX will follow a hybrid schedule, coming into the office two days per week. Otherwise, this role is remote.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
• Expert knowledge of predictive toolset, to include highly technical tools.
• Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent.
• Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the audiences and stakeholders with which s/he interacts.
• Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the aligned functional area or SBU. Ability to give effective training and presentations to management and other groups.
• Presents to senior or functional department leaders or executives.
• Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
• Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact.
• Competencies typically acquired through an advanced degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science or other relevant field of study) and 5 to 7 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelor`s degree (scientific
field of study) with 10 years of relevant experience.
• Insurance or financial services industry experience preferred.

Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
