Description
Hiring Manager: Chris Mulligan
Do you have the skills—and drive—to join a technology team working to digitally transform a trillion-dollar industry? Liberty Mutual is continuously innovating and creating industry-leading solutions that provide peace of mind for our customers worldwide. As a Solution Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our Quoting Platform by partnering with product, architecture, engineering, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, flexible, and high-quality technical solutions.
This role supports key strategic initiatives including Olympus, Frontier/UIP, and Horizon. These efforts are central to Liberty Mutual’s long-term transformation strategy, including the Olympus Auto Fully Scaled (AFS) initiative to transition all DRC reps quoting new business from Customer First Auto to the Olympus Platform by the end of Q1 2027. You will also contribute to the multi-year Frontier/UIP transformation effort and Quoting Platform Architecture-directed Horizon work. With a growing number of development squads and increasing technical demand, this role is essential to maintaining delivery speed, solution quality, and architectural alignment.
What You’ll Do
- Develop technical requirements and translate business needs into functional specifications and architecture designs.
- Design robust, flexible product and system architectures for cloud-hosted web applications.
- Work closely with business partners and engineering teams to understand complex architecture landscapes, including legacy and modern technology solutions.
- Create integration plans, data flow diagrams, deployment/topology recommendations, and system-level design documentation.
- Support test-driven development practices and contribute to the design of scalable, maintainable solutions.
- Guide the development of system, technical, and product standards based on business plans and long-term strategy.
- Partner across multiple squads to ensure solution alignment, technical consistency, and delivery effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accelerate the adoption of new technologies, and enhance overall business value.
- Collaborate in an agile environment with the creative energy of a startup and the stability of a Fortune 100 company.
- Serve as a strategic partner, motivated mentor, systems-level thinker, and forward-looking problem solver.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong experience developing technical requirements and architecture designs.
- Ability to work across complex systems and evaluate both legacy and modern technology solutions.
- Experience designing cloud-based system architectures and integration patterns.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt quickly in fast-moving environments and support multiple concurrent initiatives.
- A strategic mindset with the ability to balance immediate delivery needs with long-term platform goals.
Why This Role Matters
This role provides critical solution engineering support across the Quoting Platform portfolio at a pivotal time of growth and transformation. With multiple strategic initiatives underway and a growing number of squads, an additional Solution Engineer is needed to provide consistent technical leadership, reduce bottlenecks, and support successful delivery of high-priority work. You’ll help shape a core platform that powers the majority of our direct quoting volume, work with modern cloud-native technologies, and make a measurable impact across multiple distribution channels. This is an opportunity to lead architecture and operational excellence, influence cross-functional product delivery, and grow as a technical leader while solving challenging system-design problems.
Qualifications
-
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 10+ years of software engineering experience, including production delivery of large-scale distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience with Java and TypeScript/Node.js; full-stack experience is a plus.
- Experience Spring Boot, or similar event-driven and Java frameworks.
- Proven experience building and operating services on AWS (Fargate, Lambda, S3, IAM best practices).
- Practical experience with NoSQL data stores, especially DynamoDB; familiarity with DocumentDB or MongoDB.
- Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and performance-tuning skills.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, service integrations, and automation frameworks.
- History of leading complex technical initiatives across multiple systems or integration layers and influencing technical direction without formal authority.
- Experience working across teams to standardize engineering approaches and enterprise platform considerations (security, identity, scalability).
Preferred (Nice-to-have)
- Prior exposure to the insurance quoting lifecycle, underwriting, or digital sales integrations.
- Hands-on familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools or prompt engineering techniques (e.g., GitHub Copilot, LLM-based assistants) and experience evaluating such tools for enterprise adoption.
- Experience evaluating or adopting engineering tools/platforms at scale.
Education
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience
Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
