Description

The Manager, UW & Rating Support role will oversee the execution of underwriting operational plans and strategies that drive growth and profitability through the optimization of underwriting expertise. You will lead a dynamic team of 6 leaders and 88 total employees who are responsible for help desk support and underwriting approvals for the Direct Response Center, providing support to Small Commercial agents and underwriting help desk functions, and Personal Lines post binding underwriting activity, positioning you as a critical driver of operational excellence and underwriting discipline across the organization.

In this role, you will partner with leadership and underwriting teams to drive continuous improvement through the prioritization and implementation of innovative processes, programs, and projects aligned with segment strategy. You will actively foster strong working relationships with USRM leadership teams across multiple functions, serving as a strategic influencer in accomplishing organizational goals and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and directs staff within UW & Rate Support team.
  • Oversees recruitment, interviewing and selection of personnel.
  • Responsible for hiring, training and development, and performance management of supervisory staff.
  • Conducts and reviews performance appraisals, identifies performance problems, and initiates disciplinary actions.
  • Manages activity based costing in the production center(s).
  • Works with stakeholders and necessary resources to resolve inconsistencies between offices and opportunities to improve operations and costs per policy.
  • Partners with Product Underwriting and Distribution to support value initiatives.
  • Ensure teams effectively execute the underwriting selection process including appropriate use of guidelines, expert resources, and documentation.
  • Review and monitor overall operational results for aligned underwriting segment.
  • Identify, develop, and implement recommendations to improve performance on key underwriting objectives.
  • Monitors staff transaction volume, handling time, quality, and productivity monthly.
  • Identify opportunities to improve individual and team performance.
  • Keeps subordinates informed of current company and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Manages compliance with company policies and applicable legislations by periodically auditing files.

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting operations, processes and tools; understanding of change management, knowledge management and project management concepts, insurance legal & regulatory environments
  • Ability to exercise influence while working cross functionally and building relationships
  • Skills and competencies include project management, process mapping, strategic mindset, and organizational agility, creative thinking, achievement oriented, collaborative, highly adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity, and ability to plan, organize and get work done through others
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in relevant discipline or related experience required; Masters Degree preferred
  • 10+ years related experience with 5+ years in leadership role
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills
  • Ability to promote a team environment
  • Experience managing individuals or operations required
