Job Introduction:
The GDS, Compute Platforms team is seeking to hire a Manager, Engineering candidate to lead our Middleware team. The candidate will be responsible for critical enterprise platforms and services that enable applications across the organization.
This is a fast-paced leadership role at the intersection of platform engineering, modernization, operational excellence, and people leadership. You will lead a talented engineering team responsible for operating and evolving foundational middleware capabilities while helping move the organization toward more modern, automated, cloud-aligned platforms.
You will be expected to run the present, modernize the platform, and simplify the future.
About the job:
- Lead the Middleware Platforms engineering team, set priorities, and align work with Compute Platforms and Liberty Mutual’s technology and business strategies.
- Define platform roadmaps and measurable outcomes in partnership with Product Owners, Architects, Engineering Leaders, and key stakeholders.
- Modernize middleware platforms through automation, standardization, cloud adoption, self-service, and simplification while maintaining reliability, security, performance, and availability.
- Manage platform lifecycle activities, including upgrades, vulnerability remediation, resiliency, capacity, technical debt, and retirement of legacy capabilities.
- Reduce operational risk and manual work, improve the developer experience, and establish metrics to measure platform health, engineering effectiveness, and customer outcomes.
- Manage dependencies, remove roadblocks, and lead through incidents, changing priorities, and complex technical challenges.
- Build strong partnerships across application development, infrastructure, cloud, architecture, cybersecurity, operations, vendors, and technology leadership.
- Develop and retain engineering talent through coaching, performance management, career development, and opportunities for growth.
- Build a high-performing, accountable team culture focused on collaboration, engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and customer outcomes.
- Manage vendor relationships and contribute to technology strategy, investment decisions, financial planning, workforce planning, and evaluation of new technologies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience,
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in a relevant technology field.
- Minimum 3 or more years of technology leadership or people management experience preferred.
- Experience leading engineering teams responsible for enterprise platforms, middleware, infrastructure, cloud services, or other highly available technology capabilities.
- Understanding of modern engineering practices, including automation, APIs, cloud technologies, infrastructure platforms, DevOps, CI/CD, observability, security, and reliability.
- Middleware experience strongly preferred, including application integration, messaging, application runtimes, or related enterprise technologies.
- Ability to lead modernization efforts while maintaining reliable production services.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to navigate complex technical and organizational challenges.
- Strong communication, consultation, and presentation skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, business partners, and senior technology leaders.
- Ability to build partnerships, influence across organizational boundaries, and align stakeholders with competing priorities.
- Experience developing talent, building high-performing teams, managing performance, and creating opportunities for engineers to grow.
- Understanding of technology financial management, vendor management, workforce planning, and product or platform operating models preferred.
