Role Overview:
Business Unit Legal Solutions (BULS) is seeking a highly experienced coverage attorney to lead its Coverage & Insights team. The person is responsible for: 1) leading a team of experienced insurance coverage and policy experts providing strategic legal consultation and insights aligned with Liberty’s two strategic business units’, US Retail markets and Global Risk Solutions, needs; 2) scaling a foundational practice and supporting framework for the delivery of key internal and industry insurance coverage and policy insights and trends to drive greater risk awareness and improved outcomes by product and line of business; and 3) driving operational excellence with a focus on efficient delivery of legal services, aligning the right resources to the team’s work, using data and technology to optimize efficiency and to harvest policy and product insights.
This leader champions an inclusive, high-performing culture and will collaborate across BU Legal and GL&C to optimize resources, develop talent, and advance business and legal goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and inspire a team of experienced coverage attorneys delivering expert insurance coverage services that enhance risk awareness and drive excellent business outcomes for USRM and GRS.
- As a foundational component of BULS, scale and continuously innovate a systemic practice and framework to deliver insights on:
- Product enhancements and refinements;
- Emerging coverage and industry trends;
- Regulatory changes impacting policy interpretation and coverage matters.
- Scale and continuously improve the BULS updated coverage support model with a product and line of business focus.
- Develop and maintain monitoring tools (e.g., dashboards and trackers) to measure team performance, efficiency, and the impact of insights generated.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize workflows, resource allocation, and operational effectiveness within Coverage & Insights and BULS.
- Partner and collaborate with the Agile BU Experts team to manage team performance and capacity to balance workloads and create bandwidth for supporting key business initiatives and high demand periods in partnership with BU legal teams.
- Proactively collaborate across BULS, BU Legal teams, and business units to share legal insights that improve business outcomes in line with GL&C’s client engagement model.
- Champion an inclusive, equitable, and engaged team environment focused on growth, development, and high performance.
- Providing legal advice on insurance coverage matters on first and third-party issues for commercial specialty matters, involving a high degree of original and creative legal endeavor, complex or novel issues, and/or vigorous adverse parties, where needed and appropriate.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) from an accredited law school and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum 15 years of substantial legal experience within insurance coverage and insurance operational environments. Prior leadership or managerial experience preferred.
- Proven experience leading legal teams in complex, cross-functional environments and inspiring a dynamic team through change and continuous improvement.
- Deep understanding of personal and commercial insurance products, including commercial specialty, (e.g. Environmental, EPL, Cyber, etc.), lines of business and insurance operations, including relevant business environment, strategy, and legal implications with clear links to team, department, and enterprise strategies.
- Proven strategic thinking, problem-solving, and proficiency with data to influence decision-making and make compelling cases for change.
- Excellent communication and executive stakeholder management capabilities, with ability to build trust across multiple groups.
- Growth mindset with demonstrated ability to embrace and drive continuous improvement through innovative technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, and processes.
