Description

LMI's Global Strategy & Capital Allocation team is seeking a highly analytical, intellectually curious, and execution-oriented Associate to join the Specialized Portfolios group. This is a generalist investment role with a broad mandate: the Associate will support portfolio construction, manager research, and investment strategy across several strategic portfolios, including the Liberty Mutual Foundation portfolio and Liberty Mutual’s Corporate Owned Life Insurance portfolio. The role offers broad exposure across asset classes and investment structures, while also contributing to the evolution of LMI’s portfolio management infrastructure and governance processes. In addition to supporting specialized portfolios, the Associate will contribute to broader General Account initiatives.

These specialized portfolios are newly established, and this position is an opportunity to get ground-level exposure to portfolio design and management across highly visible strategic initiatives for Liberty Mutual. The Associate will work closely with senior investment professionals across public and private markets, partnering with internal investment business units (IBUs), finance, tax, legal, accounting, and risk teams to deliver thoughtful portfolio solutions aligned with long-term objectives and constraints.

GSCA (Global Strategy & Capital Allocation) is responsible for managing Liberty Mutual's General Account investment strategy, overseeing capital deployment, and balancing portfolio resilience, liquidity, and regulatory requirements across the enterprise. The group also manages specialized investment mandates to support the company's long-term financial objectives.

Responsibilities:

Portfolio Construction & Investment Strategy

  • Support portfolio construction and investment strategy for specialized portfolios, including strategic and tactical asset allocation, investment policy design, benchmarks, and target allocation frameworks
  • Conduct portfolio analysis and scenario modeling to support investment decisions
  • Help build and maintain portfolio management infrastructure, including portfolio position monitoring, performance reporting, dashboards, analytics, and governance processes

Manager Research & Due Diligence

  • Conduct investment due diligence on external managers in collaboration with LMI’s GAM, GCM, and GLM business units
  • Support manager selection, sizing, and monitoring across public and private market strategies
  • Prepare investment memos and recommendations for investment committees

Portfolio Governance & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Prepare investment committee materials, portfolio reviews, and ad hoc analyses
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders across Investment, Legal, Tax, Accounting, Risk, and Finance teams
  • Partner across LMI and Liberty Mutual Group to execute portfolio strategy and leverage shared investment expertise

Strategic Initiatives & General Account Support

  • Contribute to investment mandate design, portfolio diagnostics, and strategic initiatives for the broader LMI General Account
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives supporting GSCA's role as the office of the CIO

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; CFA, CAIA, or MBA preferred
  • 5+ years of related experience in investing, portfolio management, and/or manager selection
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills with high attention to detail
  • Solid grounding in portfolio construction, including asset allocation, risk budgeting, and benchmark design; broad familiarity with investment strategies across public equities, fixed income, private markets, and real assets, and how they fit together at the portfolio level
  • Experience conducting manager due diligence and presenting investment recommendations to senior stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communicator; able to distill complex investment concepts into well-structured memos and presentations
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; this role depends on working effectively with LMI's IBUs, and candidates must be able to influence and coordinate across teams
  • Familiarity with large language models (LLMs) and modern analytical tools for enhancing research, presentation, and decision-making processes
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with Bloomberg systems preferred
