Description
The Energy Underwriting Manager leads a small team of Energy Underwriters while maintaining direct underwriting responsibility for a book of business. This role combines people leadership with hands-on underwriting expertise to support disciplined execution of Liberty Mutual’s underwriting strategy, strong portfolio performance, and effective broker and client relationships. The manager oversees the quality, profitability, and consistency of underwriting decisions across the team and personally underwrites a portfolio of Energy risks. The role operates under the direction of the manager and focuses primarily on underwriting execution, governance, and portfolio quality rather than broader strategic planning.

- Maintains direct underwriting responsibility for a book of Energy business, evaluating new business, renewals, referrals, and policy changes across areas such as power generation, renewable energy, oil and gas, utilities, infrastructure, and related industrial risks.
- Underwrites complex Energy risks within established authority and appetite, balancing profitability, growth, pricing, terms and conditions, capacity, risk selection, and portfolio diversification.
- Oversees underwriting execution for the team by administering and monitoring underwriting rules, guidelines, referral practices, documentation standards, and delegated authority requirements.
- Analyzes the quality and performance of policies underwritten by the team through file reviews, portfolio monitoring, and review of key indicators such as profitability, rate adequacy, retention, exposure growth, loss trends, and risk mix.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with brokers, agents, clients, and internal partners, maintaining a visible market presence and leveraging these relationships to support team objectives, profitable growth, and expansion of professional networks.
- Contributes proactively to initiatives beyond the immediate team, represents Liberty Mutual’s value proposition across the business and market, supports continuous improvement, may cover for the manager as needed, and continues to build people-management and leadership capabilities.
