Description
The USRM Claims Data Science team is hiring a Director II, Data Science as part of a broader expansion of our team. This is a people leadership role responsible for providing both strategic and technical direction for a team of data scientists who develop and deploy models servicing our Auto Physical Damage (APD) Claims organization.
Claims data science is bursting with opportunity. Recent advances in Large Language Models, Computer Vision, and other technologies bring many previously impracticable business challenges into the realm of possibility. Claims data science can be a key competitive advantage for Liberty Mutual in the years to come – and this leader will be central to building that advantage by setting technical direction, developing talent, and partnering across the business to turn opportunity into delivered value.
**Candidates who live within 50 miles of Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Seattle, WA; Columbus, OH; or Plano, TX will follow a hybrid schedule, coming into the office two days per week. Otherwise, this role is remote with occasional travel.**
Responsibilities:
- Direct the development and deployment of predictive models and state-of-the-art machine learning systems, including applications that integrate structured data, text data, and generative AI
- Remain hands-on, personally contributing to model development, coding, and technical problem-solving alongside the team
- Partner with senior business leaders, domain experts, and technology partners to gather requirements, secure alignment and resources, and ensure models are successfully integrated and maintained in production
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of data scientists, fostering technical excellence, career growth, and a culture of collaboration and continuous learning
- Set the technical bar through hands-on code and model reviews, pairing, and direct guidance on complex technical challenges
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in data science and machine learning, and guide the team in applying them to complex problems in the insurance claims domain
Preferred skills and experiences:
- Strong, current hands-on data science skills (e.g., SQL, Python programming, and statistical inference)
- Experience leading and developing data science or technical teams (formal people-management experience preferred but not required)
- Deep knowledge of the end-to-end data science lifecycle and proven ability to bring models from concept to production
- Track record of collaborating with and influencing stakeholders who are not data scientists - understanding which problems need solving, designing solutions, and bringing them to market
- Strong hands-on data science foundation (e.g., SQL, Python programming, and statistical inference) sufficient to provide meaningful technical direction and review
- Ability to translate business strategy into a prioritized technical roadmap and communicate results to senior leadership
Additional skills and experiences that are nice to have:
- Knowledge of claims processes and technology
- Experience working with claims data or claims-related projects (preferred but not required)
- Prior experience building and deploying large language modeling systems into production
- Experience deploying product in a cloud environment, at enterprise scale
- Experience managing a portfolio of concurrent data science initiatives
Qualifications

• Expert knowledge of predictive toolset, to include highly technical tools.
• Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent.
• Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the audiences and stakeholders with which s/he interacts.
• Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the aligned functional area or SBU. Ability to give effective training and presentations to management and other groups.
• Presents to senior or functional department leaders or executives.
• Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
