Role summary:

The Senior Portfolio Architect provides strategic architecture leadership for Cloud Runtimes, spanning Container Runtimes and Integration Runtimes. The current portfolio includes enterprise Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Apigee API management, and Confluent Cloud/Kafka event streaming.

The role is the senior technical partner to the Cloud Runtimes Director and connects enterprise strategy to portfolio roadmaps, investment decisions, modernization sequencing, and engineering delivery. It anchors Runtime alignment with the CloudForge Platform and, beyond individual solution architecture, ensures that runtime products evolve as a coherent platform supporting application modernization, software delivery, data, and AI use cases.

Key responsibilities:

  • Define and maintain the Cloud Runtimes target architecture, principles, transition states, and multi-year roadmap.
  • Lead architecture direction for enterprise Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Apigee, Confluent Cloud/Kafka, and related runtime and integration services.
  • Sequence modernization work across platforms while protecting availability, security, customer migration commitments, and operational resilience.
  • Translate enterprise architecture, security, AI, and data standards into practical portfolio patterns and engineering requirements.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to prioritize the highest-value outcomes, identify technical dependencies, and convert architecture direction into executable work.
  • Establish reusable patterns for application onboarding, workload portability, API enablement, event-driven architecture, policy-based access, observability, resilience, and disaster recovery.
  • Connect runtime strategy with CloudForge, public cloud, Software Delivery, DataForge, AI Backbone, Night Shift, and market modernization programs.
  • Maintain ongoing alignment between the CloudForge Platform and Cloud Runtimes, ensuring shared architecture standards, integration points, and roadmaps evolve together and runtime capabilities are consistently consumable through CloudForge.
  • Lead architecture decision records, technology lifecycle decisions, risk assessments, and build-versus-buy evaluations for the portfolio.
  • Engage application and market architects early to understand migration needs, validate patterns through focused experiments, and drive adoption.
  • Coach solution engineers and architects, clarify decision rights, and build architecture capability across the runtime teams.

Qualifications

Required skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience leading architecture for complex platform, cloud, container, integration, or middleware portfolios.
  • Deep knowledge in one or more runtime domains, with the ability to lead across Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, API management, and event streaming.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, networking, identity and access, secrets, observability, security, resiliency, disaster recovery, and platform operations.
  • Experience developing target-state architectures and practical migration roadmaps for critical enterprise platforms.
  • Ability to connect architecture decisions to customer outcomes, operational risk, cost, capacity, technical debt, and investment priorities.
  • Proven ability to influence Product, Engineering, Security, Enterprise Architecture, vendors, and application teams across organizational boundaries.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including architecture decision records, strategy documents, technical reviews, and leadership presentations.
  • Experience moving ideas from architecture through experimentation, product prioritization, engineering delivery, and adoption.
  • Sound judgment balancing standardization with product-team autonomy and enterprise patterns with domain-specific needs.

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Hands-on architecture experience with Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Apigee, Confluent Cloud/Kafka, AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience leading large-scale application migration, platform retirement, or technology convergence programs.
  • Experience defining API-first, event-driven, and AI-ready integration patterns.
  • Experience with policy-based access, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, platform product management, and developer self-service.
  • Architecture experience supporting highly available Tier 0-Tier 2 services in a regulated enterprise.

Leadership capabilities:

  • Portfolio thinking connects individual platform decisions to an integrated runtime strategy and enterprise modernization outcomes.
  • Customer partnership: understands stakeholder needs, builds trust, and makes adoption and migration practical for application teams.
  • Strategic execution: works ahead of delivery teams while remaining engaged enough to ensure architecture is actionable.
  • Collaborative leadership: involves Product, Engineering, Architecture, Security, and customers early and creates shared ownership of outcomes.
  • Pragmatic decision-making: uses focused experiments and evidence to make timely decisions without waiting for perfect information.
  • Accountability and advocacy: champions platform health, required investment, and long-term outcomes while addressing immediate delivery risks.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Cloud Runtimes has a clear, integrated target architecture and funded roadmap spanning containers, APIs, and event streaming.
  • Cloud Foundry retirement and Kubernetes adoption progress through sequenced, well-supported migration patterns with controlled risk.
  • API and event platforms provide consistent, secure, resilient, and AI-ready capabilities that teams can adopt without creating custom solutions.
  • Cross-platform dependencies and architecture decisions are resolved earlier, reducing delays, duplication, and late rework.
  • Product and Engineering teams have sufficient architecture runway, clear standards, and measurable outcomes for major portfolio investments.

Additional information:

This role requires collaboration across organizational boundaries and may include periodic travel for planning, architecture, and stakeholder working sessions. The successful candidate will operate in a dynamic environment where priorities evolve as enterprise strategy, technology capabilities, and customer needs change.
