Description
The USRM Data Science Excellence team is hiring a Director II, Data Science to lead a team of data scientists who develop gradient boosted loss cost models with applications across pricing and underwriting, and who build the process and tools needed to implement a new modeling process across USRM. This is a people leadership role providing both strategic and technical direction.
The team operates a lab-to-fab model: new modeling approaches are incubated into production projects and transitioned to owning design teams once proven. Our work follows business value, and pricing is currently the largest lever. This leader will help set the team's direction across research and production. In the near term, this includes leading the Auxiliary Risk Tier (ART) rollout for a portfolio of lines of business and brands and establishing the repeatable process that makes each process more efficient than the last.
Hiring manager: Pedro Silva
Candidates who live within 50 miles of Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Seattle, WA; Columbus, OH; or Plano, TX will follow a hybrid schedule, coming into the office two days per week. Otherwise, this role is remote with occasional travel.
Responsibilities:
- Direct the development, deployment, and stewardship of loss cost pricing models using GBMs, such as the current Auxiliary Risk Tier (ART).
- Own the modeling process and tooling, not just the models: standardize how loss cost models are built, validated, deployed, refreshed, and handed off so that a new modeling process can be implemented effectively and repeatably
- Remain hands-on, personally contributing to model development, coding, and technical problem-solving alongside the team
- Set the technical bar through hands-on code and model reviews, pairing, and direct guidance on complex technical challenges
- Partner with design, underwriting, and product delivery leaders to gather requirements, secure alignment and resources, and ensure models are integrated, maintained, and ultimately transitioned to owning teams
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of data scientists spanning senior ICs with pricing and insurance modeling backgrounds and early-career ICs with research backgrounds, fostering technical excellence, career growth, and a culture of collaboration and continuous learning
- Stay current with advancements in data science and machine learning and guide the team in applying them to insurance pricing problems
Preferred skills and experiences:
- Strong, current hands-on data science skills (SQL, Python, statistical inference, GBMs, GLMs and their diagnostics)
- Experience building pricing models end to end, including regulatory filing considerations, with a proven ability to bring models from concept to production
- Experience leading and developing data scientists (formal people-management experience preferred but not required)
- Strong project management and stakeholder coordination across concurrent workstreams.
- Ability to translate business strategy into a prioritized technical roadmap and communicate results to senior leadership
Additional skills and experiences that are nice to have:
- Experience building internal tooling or pipelines that standardize a modeling workflow
- Experience deploying models in Earnix
- Experience managing a portfolio of concurrent data science initiatives
Qualifications
• Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
• Expert knowledge of predictive toolset, to include highly technical tools.
• Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent.
• Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the audiences and stakeholders with which s/he interacts.
• Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the aligned functional area or SBU. Ability to give effective training and presentations to management and other groups.
• Presents to senior or functional department leaders or executives.
• Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
• Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact.
• Competencies typically acquired through an advanced degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science or other relevant field of study) and 5 to 7 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelor`s degree (scientific
field of study) with 10 years of relevant experience.
• Insurance or financial services industry experience preferred.
Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
