MassChallenge is currently seeking a Senior Director of Marketing to join our Boston office.

Position Summary
We’re looking for a mission-driven, results-oriented Senior Director of Marketing to lead and scale our marketing function as a strategic growth engine. You know how to prioritize what matters, operate with resourcefulness, and thrive in a fast-paced, impact-driven environment. You know how to get things done and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves. You’ll lead a lean team and a network of creative partners to elevate our brand, drive demand, and fuel program and revenue growth.

This highly visible role will oversee MassChallenge’s full marketing ecosystem—from brand and content to demand generation, digital, and events—ensuring we consistently inspire, recruit, and engage startups, partners, and funders around the globe. You’ll have the autonomy to prioritize what matters most, manage external vendors to expand capacity, and deliver meaningful results with limited resources.

Location
This role is hybrid and the Sr. Director of Marketing will be expected to work from the Boston office for at least two days per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

What You'll Do

Marketing Strategy, Planning & Operations

  • Lead the development and execution of an integrated marketing strategy that supports startup recruitment, revenue generation, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Own marketing planning, prioritization, and budget allocation across functions and channels.
  • Build scalable workflows, systems, and playbooks that enable high-quality, on-time execution.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with revenue, programs, and senior leadership to align marketing with organizational goals.

Brand, Messaging & Product Marketing

  • Own MassChallenge’s brand strategy, ensuring clarity, consistency, and resonance across all platforms and audiences.
  • Translate internal program and product developments into compelling narratives and external messaging for startups, funders, and corporate partners.
  • Ensure cohesive messaging across campaigns, materials, and partner touchpoints.

Digital Marketing & Demand Generation

  • Design and execute multichannel campaigns (email, social, SEO/SEM, paid media, web) to drive high-quality startup and mentor applications across programs in health, climate, fintech, and security.
  • Optimize digital touchpoints (website, landing pages, automation tools) to increase engagement and conversions.
  • Leverage analytics to monitor funnel performance and continuously improve marketing ROI.

Content Marketing & Thought Leadership

  • Develop and manage a strategic content calendar highlighting founder stories, impact data, thought leadership, and ecosystem insights.
  • Write and edit high-impact content; manage freelancers, designers, and creators to scale execution across blogs, newsletters, reports, and video.

Program Marketing & Startup Recruitment

  • Lead marketing campaigns to recruit high-potential startups and expert mentors across MassChallenge’s programs in health, climate, fintech, and security.
  • Design and execute targeted outreach strategies that drive strong applicant pipelines and engagement.

Partner Enablement & Donor Communications

  • Create and maintain a suite of sales and marketing assets (pitch decks, one-pagers, case studies, event materials) to support partner acquisition and retention.
  • Collaborate with fundraising teams to craft donor communications, impact stories, and grant-related content.

Events & Experiential Marketing

  • Oversee marketing efforts for MassChallenge events—including accelerator launches, demo days, and convenings—to drive awareness, engagement, and participation.
  • Coordinate internal and external teams to ensure brand-aligned, high-impact experiences.

Public Relations & Communications

  • Manage PR strategy, media outreach, and speaking engagements to amplify MassChallenge’s voice and thought leadership in innovation and impact.
  • Serve as a communications leader for press opportunities, public statements, and visibility campaigns.

Marketing Analytics & Reporting

  • Define and track key marketing metrics, reporting regularly on campaign performance, conversion funnels, and budget efficiency.
  • Use data to inform strategy, optimize tactics, and demonstrate marketing’s impact on core business objectives.

Team & Vendor Leadership

  • Manage and mentor a small internal team of marketers.
  • Lead and coordinate a trusted network of freelancers, contractors, and agencies across design, content, web, video, and analytics.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive marketing experience, ideally in a startup, nonprofit, or accelerator ecosystem.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience, with a track record of building high-performing teams.
  • Proven expertise across brand, content, product marketing, demand generation, and campaign management (bonus for experience in health, climate, or fintech sectors).
  • Experience managing external partners (designers, writers, freelancers, agencies) to expand marketing capacity
  • Strong project management skills and ability to operate cross-functionally with senior leadership, revenue, and program teams.
  • Deep passion for startups, social impact, innovation ecosystems, and mission-driven work.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field is preferred.

Compensation

  • MassChallenge offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment.
  • Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and commensurate with skills and experience.
  • For this position, the base salary range is $135,000 - $150,000.
  • Internal equity considerations and the average salary of the peer range will be reviewed before making a final offer.
