The Opportunity

This position will be responsible for performing day-to-day, finance, and expense accounting functions as well as the month-end and year-end close processes. The position requires a highly motivated professional and will work with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely reconciliation, analysis, and reporting. The primary responsibilities will focus on expense accounting, analysis, and reporting including implementing and running a complex and detailed Expense Allocation processes while applying your knowledge of operating expenses and drivers to allocate general insurance expenses to products. This position will master the mechanics of expense allocations, maintain account controls and deliver transparency into the cause of allocation changes over time. This position will also partner with the Head of Operating Expenses and learn all the roles within the Expense accounting team to serve as a designated backup.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Support Cash Operations and expenses accounting team ensuring compliance with US GAAP and internal Controls.
• Full ownership of the expense allocation processes, analysis, and reporting.
• Prepare monthly, quarter, and year-end reports and analysis.
• Analyze and reconcile general ledger balances and transactions.
• Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual expenses accounting deliverables.
• Assist with ERP system upgrade and implementation.
• Special projects as requested.
• Maintain and improve processes and controls.
• Work and maintain a positive relationship with expenses accounting team including the source team.
• Partner the Controllers, FP&A, and other stakeholders as needed.
• Serve as the back up to the head of expenses accounting and other member of the Operating expenses accounting team.

The Team

The expense team is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the ledgers for all expense accounts.  Where we don’t directly control the expenses, we partner with others to validate the amounts and understand any changes.  As a team we are accountable for leases, fixed and intangible assets, select inventory accounts, impairments, intercompany management fee agreements, financial exhibits, select footnotes, quarterly expense commentaries for both GAAP and STAT, and general support and training to cost centers owners.

The Impact

This role is responsible for mastering the mechanics of MassMutual’s product allocations process.  You will become a key subject matter expert understanding a multitude of expense accounting topics, helping business partners navigate corporate processes, monitoring and improving on our key controls, solving problems, and translating accounting data into valuable information. You will help execute on the department’s strategic initiatives.

The Minimum Qualifications

• Accounting degree
• 6+ years of related accounting experience

The Ideal Qualifications

• 8+ year of progressive accounting experience in a variety of expense roles
• Demonstrated experience applying GAAP and Statutory accounting practices.
• Prior experience with offshore, sourced team members.
• Ability to influence others using expert knowledge, effective communications and demonstrated results.
• Experience writing accounting memorandums, business processes or standard work.
• Experience with data query tools like SAP Business Warehouse, Analysis for Office, Hyperion, or similar tools
• Strong computer aptitude, which includes expertise with Microsoft Excel and Word as well as SAP S4H.
• SAP S4 Hana with SAC and AO experience
• Previous experience summarizing and presenting accounting results to senior leadership.
• Ability to create and evolve new processes.
• Prior experience advising and teaching accounting concepts and processes to non-accounting business partners.
• Prior leadership experience.
• Demonstrated experience applying GAAP and Statutory accounting practices.
• Experience with data query tools like SAP Business Warehouse, Analysis for Office, Hyperion, or similar tools
• Hands on experience creating and supporting journal entries, reconciling accounts, and working with accounting controls.
• Previous experience with month-end, quarter close and year end accounting cycles.
• Ability to interact with all levels within an organization.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Strong computer aptitude, which includes expertise with Microsoft Excel and Word as well as SAP S4H.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong attention to customer service and quality results.
