The Opportunity

To enhance the organization’s assessment of financial reporting risk, we are looking for a high performing risk and control professional. The primary responsibility for this role is to manage the internal controls over financial reporting program for both MassMutual and Great American Life Insurance Company (GALIC). This role serves as the intermediary between management, ERMs co-sourced team in India and the external audit firm. Additional responsibilities include working on financial reporting risks and control assessments. The ideal candidate will be able to interact with management at all levels within the organization to understand financial reporting risks, develop analytics, and testing approaches to assess both risks and controls.

The Team

The Financial Reporting Risk team within Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) works closely with the business to evaluate financial reporting risks and the effectiveness of the related controls. The team provides assurance on the organization's overall financial reporting risk exposure and is responsible for the oversight and coordination of Internal Control Over Financial Reporting related risk assessments, control testing, and deficiency remediation.

In the Three Lines of Defense model, ERM is a second line function; our responsibility is to monitor risk and control in support of management. The business areas (first line) own their controls and internal audit (third line) provides independent assurance.

The Impact

As a Internal Controls - Financial Reporting Consulting within Financial Reporting Risk, you will work with the Head of FRR and Top and Operational Risk Assessments and the Director of Internal Control Over Financial Reporting and be a key team player owning oversight of the company’s financial internal control environment. Your responsibilities will include, among others, the following tasks:

  • Own and manage the overall internal control over financial reporting (ICOFR) program for assigned business areas
  • Manage co-sourced vendor relationship (e.g., control testing coordination, ad-hoc control assessments)
  • Liaise with the business to influence culture and practices related to risk and controls
  • Proactively identify changes in the control environment and oversee control documentation
  • Support/oversee testing of internal controls
  • Identify enhancements and efficiencies that improve the overall control testing approach, including coordination with our co-sourced testing team in India
  • Prepare timely and accurate reporting on risks and control deficiencies for both frontline and senior management
  • Effectively track work status, escalate issues as needed, and report to team in a concise and actionable format
  • Participate in additional projects supporting ERM (e.g., data strategy, enterprise risk reporting, operational risk appetite analysis)

The Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in accounting, finance or related
  • 5+ years of experience in financial analysis and reporting

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience with US GAAP or Statutory accounting/reporting
  • CPA, CIA, CFA, CISA or other professional designation
  • Knowledge of the life insurance and/or financial services industry
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong executive communication skills; experienced and confident at presenting business results to management
  • Experience in analyzing results and drawing insightful conclusions
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and complexity; willingness to explore multiple solutions to a problem
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively balance multiple priorities
  • Motivated self-starter with high aptitude for quickly learning new concepts and skills
  • In depth knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook)
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Experience with collaboration software a plus (e.g., SharePoint, Archer, BOX, Microsoft Teams)
  • Experience with data analytic tools (e.g., Alteryx, IDEA, ACL, MS Access)
