The Opportunity

This role contributes to MassMutual’s success by overseeing the design, development, and delivery of qualified and nonqualified retirement benefits of the company and its subsidiaries, as well as other financial benefits and education. Responsibilities include compliance, design and legislative changes, communication strategy of the plans, managing vendor relationships and relevant projects. This ideal candidate is a passionate, experienced, and knowledgeable benefits professional and will have overall accountability and responsibilities for the retirement programs and financial benefits for employees and agents, that models and acts in accordance with MassMutual’s core values.

The Team

The Total Rewards team drives compensation, incentive and recognition strategies that attract, engage, and retain critical talent, and provide an attractive, differentiated portfolio of health, well-being, retirement, and complementary benefits to MassMutual employees. We leverage partnerships with health, wellbeing and retirement vendors to enhance and simplify the employee experience.

The Impact:

  • Contributes to Total Rewards strategic planning, and oversees the design, development and delivery of employee and agent qualified and nonqualified retirement programs and other financial benefits and education.

  • Partner with ERISA counsel and vendors to ensure compliance requirements are met for all retirement plans including providing guidance regarding new or existing DOL and IRS regulations relating to plan audits, financial reporting, government form filings (e.g., Form 5500), funding notices and reporting.

  • Maintain awareness of current retirement benefits programs, market trends, legislative, tax, and social changes. Assess impact to the Company’s programs and design, advise senior leadership on recommended improvements and necessary updates, and manage implementation of changes as needed.

  • Partner with the HR Analytics team to design, develop, monitor, and analyze benchmarking data and other metrics relevant to retirement and financial benefits.

  • Create team strategy, monitor, and adjust responsibilities and ensure cross-training of team to align and ensure programs and processes are documented, appropriately administered and that the highest standards of service and compliance are regularly met.

  • Work cross-functionally with broader Total Rewards, HR, Legal, Finance, Technology and Procurement teams to ensure that the development, administration, communication, changes to programs, impacts on costs and opportunities uncovered are fully evaluated and vetted.

  • Manage or support special projects as necessary.

  • Set goals for the work group, develop organizational capability, and model our core values focusing on the customer, acting with integrity, valuing people, working collaboratively, and achieving results.

The Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years working in the benefits space with a strong background in design, development, and delivery of retirement benefit programs for large companies. Experience managing qualified and non-qualified Defined Benefits and Defined contribution plans is required.

  • Strong analytical skills and comprehension of retirement actuarial concepts.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) to communicate to participants and work with a broad range internal stakeholders as well as with outside vendors and consultants.

  • Ability to make decisions on the daily operations of the plans that conforms with regulatory and plan requirements, and demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills, to assess, identify problems and escalate when necessary.

  • A track record of building strong relationships, project management and people development skills.

The Ideal Qualifications

  • 5+ years of people management experience is preferred.

  • A combination corporate experience and consulting.
