The Opportunity
As a Director within the Controllers Organization, you will play a key role in helping MassMutual continue its journey toward becoming a best-in-class finance organization. We are looking for a collaborative and forward-thinking accounting leader who brings curiosity, initiative, and a passion for continuous improvement.
In this role, you will lead insurance accounting and controllership activities, providing meaningful financial insights, strengthening controls, and driving process improvements. You'll work alongside talented professionals across Finance, Investments, Reinsurance, Treasury, and Actuarial teams to deliver accurate financial reporting and support strategic business decisions.
The Team
The Insurance Controllership team is a highly visible group within Corporate Finance, comprised of talented professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The team is responsible for monthly and quarterly financial close activities, general ledger oversight, management reporting, financial statements, and regulatory filings.
We partner closely with business stakeholders to support new product launches, provide insight into financial results, and drive continuous process improvements. The Impact
As Director, you will lead the Institutional Solutions Controllership team, overseeing insurance accounting, analysis, and financial reporting for MassMutual's insurance products. You will identify reporting risks and opportunities, provide strategic financial guidance, and help ensure strong governance and operational excellence across the accounting function.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and develop a team of accounting professionals while overseeing work performed by outsourced partners and fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture.
- Ensure the accurate and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for complex insurance accounting activities.
- Analyze financial results, identify key trends and drivers, and communicate insights clearly to leadership and business partners.
- Build strong partnerships with Treasury, Investment Accounting, Reinsurance Accounting, Reporting, Strategic Business Partners, and Corporate Actuarial teams to support business and reporting objectives.
- Present financial results and recommendations to senior leadership with confidence and clarity.
- Develop, document, and maintain a strong internal control framework, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and oversee insurance accounting activities, including those performed by external service providers, to ensure effective control execution.
- Lead accounting research, policy implementation, and operational readiness for new Institutional Solutions products and insurance-related transactions.
- Partner with Accounting Policy and other teams to assess and implement new GAAP and statutory accounting guidance.
- Champion operational excellence, continuous improvement, and best practices across the controllership function.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience within public accounting and/or a large, complex corporate environment.
- 3+ years of insurance accounting experience, including general ledger processing and month-end close activities.
- 3+ years of experience applying U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting principles.
- 3+ years of experience analyzing accounting data, interpreting financial results, and communicating insights to stakeholders.
- 2+ years of experience coaching and/or developing accountants and external consultants, either as a direct manager of people or as a project/team lead
The Ideal Qualifications
- CPA, Master’s degree, MBA, or equivalent
- NAIC statutory accounting experience
- Experience with Institutional solutions including, Pension Risk Transfer (PRT), Institutional Insurance and Funding Agreements
- Experience designing, executing, and documenting internal controls, including identifying and remediating control issues.
- Strong multitasking skills with the ability to adapt to change and manage competing priorities
- Ability to lead complex, long-term projects, take ownership, and drive them to successful completion
- Ability to perform independent research and serve as a key resource for resolving unique or complex business issues
- Experience driving finance transformation initiatives, continuous improvement, and operational efficiencies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present ideas clearly and persuasively to leadership, staff, and regulatory bodies
- Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development

Salary Range:
$121,800-$159,800At MassMutual, we focus on ensuring fair equitable pay, by providing competitive salaries, along with incentive and bonus opportunities for all employees. Your total compensation package includes either a bonus target or in a sales-focused role a Variable Incentive Compensation component.
