Head of Sustainability Reporting Program, MD

State Street

State Street

Boston, MA, USA

Who we are looking for

This is a critical role within the Global Sustainability team, responsible for leading State Street’s sustainability reporting program. Working closely with Finance, this role exists to design, shape and lead the program as sustainability reporting moves from voluntary standards to mandatory.

For over two decades, corporations have delivered sustainability reports based largely on voluntary frameworks. Over the coming 3-5 years, this will change, as a new set of mandatory standards come into force, led in Europe through its Environmental Sustainability Reporting Standard (ESRS) and more broadly, by standards set by the International Sustainability Standards Board.

This is a role charged with bringing about transformation. It involves working with the current Head of Sustainability Reporting and Head of Sustainability Disclosures, and also with the new Sustainability Finance team.

As new and additional requirements develop (potentially including the new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive), the program will grow over time and include new dimensions of reporting. The expectation is for the postholder to architect the program and ensure State Street meets its obligations and commitments, galvanizing the organisation and securing the resources required in pursuit of this goal.

Success will be ensuring State Street is organized with the right program discipline and organizational structure to support the new elements required, and ensuring State Street fulfils its reporting expectations and requirements.

Why this role is important to us

You will be joining the Institutional Services function that allows us to deliver a comprehensive, holistic approach to each client relationship — for asset managers and asset owners, insurance companies, and official institutions globally. What you will be responsible for

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead in the design, development, and execution of a cohesive Global sustainability reporting program aligned with the organization’s mission and objectives.
  • Act as a liaison between executive leadership and project teams to translate sustainability reporting commitments into actionable plans.
  • Manage and oversee a program with a portfolio of projects or large scale sustainability reporting commitments, managing scope, budgets, resources, plans and ensuring execution delivers on time.
  • Define program goals, key performance indicators (KPIs), and metrics for success; ensure alignment with organizational growth and development plans as well as applicable Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
  • Ensure the highest standard of documentation is maintained to meet the requirement of internal and external auditors / assurance providers.

Program Development and Execution

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of all program activities, ensuring they deliver intended impact, meet all governance standards, and are executed within associated budget and timeline.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration and coordination, managing interdependencies among programs and across organizational departments.
  • Navigate and manage complex sustainability reporting regulatory requirements to drive compliance with a focus on risk mitigation.
  • Lead senior-level program reviews, continuously assessing progress, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing adjustments as needed.
  • Identify, assess, and proactively manage risks and dependencies across programs; develop robust change management strategies to address challenges and communicate impacts.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, develop, mentor, and manage a high-performing team (direct or indirect), fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities to team members (direct and indirect reports).
  • Build and maintain a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence across all program teams.

Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Management

  • Develop, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership, business partners, and corporate functions. In particular, work in close partnership with the Finance Sustainability Controllers and Finance’s program management.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for Global sustainability reporting program-related matters, ensuring effective communication and transparency.
