Investment Solutions Group – Head of Manager Research, Public Markets - MD

The Head of Manager Research covering public markets is an important role within State Street Global Advisor’s Investment Solutions Group (ISG). You will be member of the ISG’s leadership team, reporting to the ISG Chief Investment Officer working closely with other investment team leaders. You will oversee a global team of research analysts responsible for the selection of internal and external public markets and hedge fund managers used within our multi asset client portfolios. It will also work closely with SSGA Product teams for the selection and oversight of third party managers sub-advising SSGA products. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, leading the strategic selection and evaluation of third party investment managers, ensuring alignment with client portfolio needs, proactively identifying new strategies for consideration, managing to organizational goals, and performance standards. It will also include the oversight of processes for manager due diligence, monitoring, and retention decisions. This role will need to work closely with OCIO strategists, multi-asset portfolio managers, private market research teams, and Product to ensure strong alignment of objectives.

As the Head of Manager Research you will own oversight of the following activities:

  • Public Market Manager Selection
    • Leading the team and personally evaluate and select investment managers to meet portfolio construction requirements of multi-asset class portfolios.
    • This includes both internal and third party strategies
    • Develop and enhance investment philosophy around the selection and removal of managers
    • Proactively identify new strategies to be considered for client portfolios
  • Performance Oversight
    • Monitor and analyze performance of manager list, understand drivers of performance and ensuring adherence to agreed upon objectives
  • Product Development
    • Collaborate with the SSGA Product teams to review potential managers for possible sub-advisory roles in SSGA products
  • Leadership
    • Oversee and lead a diverse global team of analysts fostering good collaboration, innovation and thoughtful investment decisions
    • Provide leadership across the Investment Solutions Group to help meet team goals and objectives
    • Active participant in the management of our multi-asset client solutions, including our OCIO client base
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Represent the ISG team in discussions with current and prospective clients to provide clear and inspiring description of the manager overview process. This includes the creation of thought leadership to highlight SSGA’s capabilities and market views.
    • Engage with governance committees and Boards for selection and regular review of third party managers
    • Collaborate with internal users of the your teams research, which will include those within ISG, Product, and senior SSGA management

Education & Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of financial services experience with an investment firm including experience in investment management, manager selection, and performance monitoring
  • Proven ability to develop and implement global processes and frameworks
  • Track record in successful stakeholder management
  • Bachelor’s degree required and an advanced degree (MBA, JD, or master’s degree) preferred
  • CFA or similar designation preferred
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with strong collaboration and experience managing within cross functional teams.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats to various situations and audiences (within the firm as well as with clients and strategic partners)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving in a complex setting
  • Ability to detect emerging trends, and encourage and make recommendations for creative change / challenge the status quo
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities and lead cross function team efforts
  • Effective stakeholder management and business leader
  • Self-motivated individual with intellectual curiosity, high energy level, strong work ethic and demonstrated personal and professional integrity
  • Demonstrate initiative and work independently; aptitude to self-direct and set priorities in a fast-paced environment

Salary Range:

$170,000 - $282,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
