Head of Independent Data and Reporting Risk, Managing Director

Who we are looking for

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join Operational Risk Management and Compliance department within the State Street’s Enterprise Risk Management as the Head of Independent Data and Reporting Risk, Managing Director. This role is crucial for overseeing the independent data and reporting risk activities within State Street’s second line of defense, ensuring that our data management and reporting processes are robust, accurate, and compliant with regulatory requirements.

The goal of ERM is to ensure that State Street proactively identifies, understands, and prudently manages its risks in support of our business strategy. As such, ERM provides risk oversight, support, and coordination to ensure consistent identification, measurement and management of all risks arising from the provision of products and services to our clients.

The Head of Independent Data and Reporting Risk will establish a team of subject matter experts with a thorough understanding of regulatory and management requirements for end-to-end data governance, and regulatory and management reporting. The individual will work closely with the senior leadership across the lines of defense including Enterprise Chief Data Officer, Central Controls, Operational Risk and Enterprise Risk and Compliance Leadership, and Corporate Audit. The individual will oversee the end-to-end execution of reviews of first line data governance, aggregation, and reporting practices, formalize an opinion, and present results to relevant committees. The role requires knowledge and understanding of US and international regulatory requirements for risk data aggregation and reporting, as well as familiarity with regulatory and risk management reporting for global financial institutions.

What you will be responsible for

As the Head of Independent Data and Reporting Risk, you will:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee execution of a comprehensive framework for independent review and challenge of data and reporting risk management at State Street including reporting to Executive Management, Board of Directors, and regulators.

  • Establish a team of subject matter experts responsible for independent oversight of data and reporting risk.

  • Provide the second line of defense oversight, review and challenge of the data governance and regulatory and management reporting policies and procedures, identifying deficiencies and driving to resolution.

  • Lead development and implementation of data and reporting risk metrics and establishment of corresponding risk appetite, including underlying quantitative limits and thresholds and qualitative criteria.

  • Evaluate the state of firm’s adherence to established risk appetite, collaborate with senior stakeholders across the lines of defense on gap remediation, communicate findings and recommendations to senior management and relevant risk governance committees.

  • Collaborate with various departments, including Enterprise Chief Data Office, IT, Finance, Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance, Central Controls, and Corporate Audit, on the matters related to data integrity and risk reporting consistency across the organization.

  • Stay abreast of regulatory developments and industry best practices related to data and reporting risk.

  • Deep understanding and familiarity with data management and reporting regulations including BCBS 239 and European Central Bank Guide on Effective Risk Data Aggregation and Risk Reporting.

  • Experience in deconstructing complex data and reporting processes and understanding the underlying operational and regulatory compliance risks and awareness of control by design data architecture.

  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to develop insights and communicate findings clearly and concisely to internal partners, senior management, internal audit, boards of directors, and regulators.

  • An understanding of AI techniques and tools to help stakeholders develop better capabilities for leveraging data.

  • Experience in or an understanding of the Financial Services industry or in a similar regulated industry.

  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and communication skills.

  • Ability to gain trust and respect of business partners.

  • Strong work ethic and highly organized to manage multiple deliverables.

Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in data management, regulatory reporting, operational risk management, internal controls, or internal audit.

  • Understanding of bank balance sheet and income statement, financial and non-financial risks within global financial organizations, and their impact on data and reporting.

  • Bachelor degree required, Master degree in Finance, Economics, or in STEM subjects is a plus.

Salary Range:

$175,000 - $287,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
