We are seeking a senior executive to serve as Global Head of Strategy, M&A, and Internal Consulting, a highly visible leadership role with enterprise‑wide impact. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this executive will partner closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and senior business leaders to shape and advance State Street’s long‑term corporate strategy.

You will be accountable for setting and executing the firm’s enterprise strategy, leading the inorganic growth agenda across mergers and acquisitions and strategic minority investments, and overseeing the firm’s internal consulting function. The internal consulting organization plays a critical role in driving execution of the firm’s most important strategic priorities and enterprise transformations.

This position sits at the center of State Street’s strategic decision‑making and serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on matters of growth, portfolio optimization, transformation, and enterprise priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise & Business Unit Strategy

  • Lead State Street’s firmwide strategic planning process, partnering with senior leadership to define and align corporate and business unit strategies.

  • Design and facilitate Executive Committee and Board strategy offsites, ensuring clarity, rigor, and alignment on enterprise priorities and long‑term objectives.

  • Provide ongoing strategic counsel to the CEO, CFO, and Executive Committee on key market, competitive, and enterprise‑level strategic issues.

  • Deliver high‑impact strategic initiatives that address the firm’s most pressing enterprise‑level challenges and accelerate execution of strategic priorities.

Inorganic Growth & Strategic Investments

  • Partner with business leaders to set and execute the firm’s inorganic growth agenda across M&A and strategic minority investments in support of State Street’s long‑term strategy.

  • Lead transaction activity from strategic assessment through execution and integration, in close partnership with Finance, Legal, Risk, and business leadership.

  • Oversee governance and active management of the firm’s minority investment portfolio, ensuring alignment with strategic, financial, and risk objectives.

Internal Consulting & Strategic Execution

  • Lead State Street’s internal consulting organization, delivering best‑in‑class strategy, program leadership, and analytical support focused on the firm’s highest‑value enterprise priorities (e.g., growth, cost efficiency, risk, technology)

  • Define and enforce a clear consulting mandate tied to measurable enterprise outcomes, including financial impact and critical strategic KPIs

  • Establish and manage enterprise‑level governance for internal consulting work, including demand management, project intake, prioritization, and ROI thresholds, in partnership with the CEO, CFO, and Executive Committee.

  • Drive strong economic discipline across the internal consulting portfolio by tracking cost, value delivered, and time‑to‑impact, and benchmarking internal delivery against external alternatives.

  • Build and scale enterprise change and execution capabilities, including methodologies, tools, and operating rhythms to support complex, cross‑firm initiatives.

  • Maintain independence and credibility of the internal consulting function, ensuring objective, fact‑based perspectives and appropriate challenge to business leadership.

  • Lead a hybrid consulting model that integrates internal teams with selective external advisors to supplement specialized expertise while preserving institutional knowledge and enterprise continuity.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Attract, develop, and retain top‑tier strategy and consulting talent, fostering a high‑performance, inclusive, and collaborative culture.

  • Position the Strategy and Internal Consulting function as a key leadership development engine for State Street, with strong talent rotation into senior roles across the firm.

  • Set a consistently high bar for intellectual rigor, judgment, execution discipline, and professionalism aligned with State Street’s leadership standards.

Reporting & Governance

The role has a dual reporting relationship to the Chief Financial Officer and a rotating senior business executive (currently the CEO of State Street Investment Management). For M&A, strategic investments, and internal consulting activities, reporting is to the Chief Financial Officer for governance purposes.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

The successful candidate will bring deep strategy leadership experience, strong executive presence, and a demonstrated ability to drive measurable enterprise impact in a complex, global organization.

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in top‑tier management consulting and/or corporate strategy leadership; prior experience at a leading strategy consulting firm strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise strategy, M&A, partnerships, and innovation initiatives.

  • Deep experience within financial services, banking, or related industries; exposure to asset management, asset servicing, data and analytics, fintech, and capital markets preferred.

  • Proven ability to influence and partner effectively with C‑suite executives, Boards, and senior stakeholders.

  • Strong people leadership capabilities, with a proven track record of building, developing, and retaining high‑performing teams.

  • Exceptional analytical, problem‑solving, and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to structure and address complex enterprise‑level challenges.

  • Clear, compelling communicator with strong executive presence in both written and verbal contexts.

  • Ability to operate effectively across a highly matrixed, global organization.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, CFA, or equivalent experience) strongly preferred.

Salary Range:

$300,000 - $412,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
