Who we are looking for
The Head of Legal Technology is a senior technology leader accountable for defining, delivering, and operating the end‑to‑end Legal Technology and Legal Security portfolio in close partnership with the Legal organization. This role is central to transforming Legal’s operating model, modernizing technology platforms, and embedding strong security, risk, and compliance capabilities across all Legal systems and processes.
The role balances strategic transformation (AI‑enabled capabilities, eDiscovery, platform modernization, legal workflow digitization) with disciplined execution, cyber resiliency, and regulatory readiness across the Legal application and security landscape.
Why this role is important to us
State Street’s Legal and Security functions play a critical role in providing independent assurance over a complex, global, and highly regulated organization. As technology risk, data, and AI become increasingly central to that mission, legal effectiveness depends on strong, fit‑for‑purpose technology enablement.
In this role, you will help modernize how Legal is executed at scale—supporting consistent global delivery, deeper risk insight, and responsible innovation—while maintaining the rigor and discipline expected by senior management and regulators.
What you will be responsible for
Legal Technology & Security Strategy
- Define and execute a multi‑year Legal Technology and Legal‑owned Security strategy aligned to Legal priorities, regulatory expectations, and enterprise GTS standards.
- Transform the Legal technology operating model to support modern, scalable, and resilient Legal services.
- Own the integrated Legal portfolio spanning CLM, legal operations, eDiscovery, legal hold, security tooling, and supporting platforms.
- Ensure predictable execution across discretionary and non‑discretionary initiatives with clear milestones, dependencies, and ownership.
- Drive adoption, operational readiness, and value realization from delivered capabilities.
- Ensure all Legal applications meet enterprise standards for ISRMP, ARB, IAM (SailPoint), MFA, SIEM/logging, encryption, data protection, and resiliency.
- Partner with Cybersecurity, Risk, Audit, and Compliance to remediate findings and maintain continuous audit readiness.
- Proactively identify and manage Legal‑specific technology and security risks.
Business Partnership & Governance
- Serve as the primary technology and security partner to Legal senior leadership.
- Establish strong intake, prioritization, and governance processes for Legal demand.
- Provide transparent roadmap, trade‑off, and risk communication to support leadership decision‑making.
- Own vendor strategy, contract oversight, and financial management for the Legal Technology portfolio.
People & Leadership
- Build and lead high‑performing Legal Technology and Security Technology teams, including internal staff and strategic partners.
- Set clear accountability, execution discipline, and modern delivery practices across the Legal portfolio.
What we value
These skills will help you succeed in this role:
- Strong technology leadership combined with credible Legal domain experience
- Ability to translate complex audit needs into practical, scalable technology solutions
- Experience managing high‑performing teams and developers
- Clear communication and the ability to influence across functions
- A pragmatic approach to innovation, risk, and control
Education & Preferred Qualifications
- 12+ years of progressive technology leadership experience, preferably supporting Legal, Risk, Compliance, or Security functions in regulated environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading Legal technology transformations, including CLM, eDiscovery, legal operations, and physical Security risk management.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity, regulatory controls, and technology risk management.
- Proven people leadership experience managing technology and security teams.
- Ability to influence senior Legal, Technology, and Risk stakeholders with clear, pragmatic decision‑making.
