Description

PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION:

The Admissions Counselor has general responsibility for assisting in the coordination, development and implementation of an overall recruitment plan for full-time, undergraduate students.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is an administrative position within the Enrollment Management Division.


ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The Admissions Counselor will assist in developing and implementing admissions activities to obtain the desired enrollment of new students.
  2. He/she is responsible for research and information regarding high schools and two-year University’s in his/her assigned territory. Based on all available information, the Counselor will decide if the school should be visited every year, visited every other year, visited every two years, not be visited but placed on a mailing list, or ignored.
  3. He/she will represent the University at high school visits, University fairs and other functions. The majority of the travel will be in the assigned territory. He/she will maintain documentation for recruiting expenses, and submit these (and other expenses) in a timely manner.
  4. He/she is responsible for contacting students regarding incomplete applications. Once an application is complete. The Counselor will be responsible for reviewing applications in an accurate, consistent and timely manner.
  5. He/she will make decisions to accept or deny applicants. For borderline cases, the Counselor will be responsible for presenting the applicant’s record to the Admissions Committee, participate in the discussion, and vote to accept or deny.
  6. He/she will provide presentations regarding Western New England University, the admissions process, and other topics to various audiences on or off campus.
  7. The Admissions Counselor will participate in Open Houses and Saturday morning Office coverage.
  8. Each Admissions Counselor will be assigned responsibilities that will necessitate independent judgment and decision-making. These may include tasks such as managing the Golden Bear for a Day, social media, accepted student yield programs; athletic liaison, updating the website; managing emails; and overseeing advertising.
  9. He/she will participate in telecounseling, and will be responsible for achieving the defined quotas.
  10. He/she will submit an annual report to the Director of Undergraduate Admissions by June 1.
  11. He/she will perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Undergraduate Admissions.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Ability to sufficiently read and write the English language to understand, communicate, and correspond with other individuals.
  2. Ability to understand, and to clearly and effectively communicate orally in the English language.
  3. Ability to utilize a computer terminal and appropriate computer programs.
  4. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations manually and with the use of a calculator to calculate grade point averages, maintain expense reports, and perform other required functions.
  5. Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions within a reasonable time period.
  6. Ability to work with and cooperate with the supervisor, faculty members, and other University employees to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
  7. Possess knowledge of the admissions field and University operations.
  8. Ability to review, understand, and apply concepts presented in training programs or conferences, or contained in the professional literature and governmental regulations.
  9. Possess the willingness to devote sufficient time and energy to accomplish the position's responsibilities.
  10. Possess sensitivity to student concerns, and tact and diplomacy in communicating with students and the public.
  11. Ability to operate an automobile.
  12. Ability to carry University materials to and from University fairs (including packing briefcase and boxes of materials).
  13. Ability to get oneself physically to and from programs with reasonable accommodation.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

  1. Education: A Bachelors degree is required.
  2. Experience: Prior professional experience in an Admissions Office is desirable.
  3. Licenses: Valid driver’s license is required.
  4. Other: The position requires extensive interaction with various publics either in person or on the telephone. Appropriate professional demeanor, appearance, and conduct are essential.
